Fine jewellery is a precious investment and expression of love that should last a lifetime, so for this reason, it is important to care for it accordingly. Below are some simple tips that will help make caring for your jewellery a breeze.

Cleaning

Most diamond and gemstone jewellery can be cleaned at home very easily. All you need is a bowl of warm water, some dishwashing liquid and a soft toothbrush. Let the items soak in the soapy water for a few minutes, then give them a light scrub with the brush, rinse under the tap and dry on a tea towel with a hair dryer. Pearls can be cleaned with a soft lint-free cloth.

Maintenance

Wear and tear is a completely normal effect on frequently worn jewellery. That’s why it is important to have your jewellery professionally checked and serviced every 1 - 2 years depending on wear. Our professional jewellers will inspect and tighten any stones that may have come loose, file out any deep scratches/dents and polish your jewellery to bring it back to that luminous new condition.

Storage

Keeping your jewellery stored safely when it is not worn is paramount. Where possible, keep your jewellery (and its related documents - invoices, certificates, valuations etc) that is not worn regularly in a locked safe in the boxes or pouches they came in. For jewellery that you wear on a regular or daily basis (earrings, engagement ring, wedding ring, watch etc), remember to keep them in a handy spot at home when you take them off; and always keep them in the same spot - that way you will never forget where you left them. It is also wise to keep your jewellery in a soft-padded jewellery box.

The Don'ts

As you wear jewellery more frequently, it becomes part of your lifestyle and look. Jewellery is meant to be worn, enjoyed and admired, however, jewellery is not indestructable and you should keep the following tips in mind:

  • DON’T wear your jewellery to the gym. Not only can it get caught on gym equipment that may damage your jewellery, it will get very dirty very quickly from all the sweat.
  • DON’T wear your rings when lifting weights or heavy items. The hardness of steel and the force generated by the heavy weights will damage your rings - even platinum rings.
  • DON’T wear your jewellery when swimming - especially rings, as they can easily slip off in the water and some chlorines in swimming pools can tarnish the metal.
  • DON’T wear your jewellery when sleeping as it can become caught in bed sheets and hair.
