The 4Cs OF Diamonds
There are lot of things to consider when purchasing a diamond. For many people, it is one of the most important items they will ever buy in their lifetime. For this reason, it is critical that you are as well-informed as possible so that you can make the right decision for you when buying a diamond. For a long time, “The 4 C’s of diamond” (The 4 key quality characteristics) has been used to help determine a diamonds characteristics and quality.
A diamonds weight is measured by “carats”. 1.00 carat is equal to 0.2 grams. The weight of a diamond significantly affects its value. For example, two diamonds with the same colour and clarity can have a difference of hundreds to thousands of dollars between them where the only difference is that one weighs 0.98ct and the other weights 1.01ct. Visually, they may be similar, but the tiny difference in weight can mean a huge difference in price. At Tok Jewellers, we stock and sell GIA-certified diamonds from 0.50ct.
Diamonds are all about light performance and sparkle. Therefore, a diamonds cutting quality is arguably the most important quality feature. The cut is what truly brings a diamond to life and allows it to perform at its best. When a diamond is exposed to light, it will reflect the light off its facets and reflect back with a bright and colourful sparkle (brilliance and scintillation). If the diamond is cut too deep or too shallow, then too much light is leaked/lost when the diamond reflects light back, resulting in a dull-looking diamond.
Round brilliant cut diamonds that are independently graded and certified by the GIA are given a cut grade of either EXCELLENT, VERY GOOD, GOOD, FAIR or POOR. Other fancy shapes (princess, pear, oval etc.) are not currently given a cut grade on the report as there is no industry-wide consensus as to what constitutes an EXCELLENT cut fancy shape diamond due to different consumer preferences; for example, some customers like their pear shape diamonds to be long and slender, whilst others prefer them to be shorter and wider. At Tok Jewellers, we stock and sell GIA-certified diamonds with cut grades of EXCELLENT and VERY GOOD as they represent the best quality diamonds.
Clarity refers to the absence of inclusions and blemishes. Diamonds naturally have internal features (inclusions) and surface irregularities (blemishes). Together, they’re called clarity characteristics. To help separate the subtle differences in clarity, we follow the GIA clarity grading scale that separates diamonds into 5 main clarity sectors: Flawless (FL and IF), Very Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2), Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2), Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2) and Included (I1, I2 and I3). The higher a diamonds clarity is, the higher its price is due to its rarity.
At Tok Jewellers, we only stock and sell GIA-certified diamonds that are Flawless to SI2 in clarity. All our diamonds are inspected by our expert diamond graders to ensure they are clean to the naked eye and have no potentially dangerous inclusions. We recommend that for the best value, you should consider a diamond that is VS or SI in clarity, as the clarity characteristics are generally not visible to the naked eye which can allow you to get a larger diamond with a higher colour grade.
When describing a diamonds colour, gemmologists are actually referring to the lack of colour present in the diamond. To help separate the subtle colour differences, we follow the GIA colour grading scale that separates the colours from D being the highest and most colourless diamond, down to Z which has a very noticeable yellow body colour.
D, E and F coloured diamonds are colourless, meaning they have no eye-visible body colour; they are shades of clear diamonds. Fine quality colourless diamonds are very rare and attract the highest prices. G, H, I and J colour diamonds are considered to be near-colourless, meaning they have very slight traces of body colour in them. K to Z colour diamonds have varying degrees of noticeable traces of colour.
